Feature Requests

Posted by Felipe Saint-Jean on 08/10/2008 at 02:28 PM

This is the new section for feature requests and keeping them organized to be sure they all get considered. (I'm in the procces of gathering all feature requests from this site and emails I have received)

  • Tax on the total (by Zach Dennison) (coming in 1.2)
  • Unchecking an item doesn't remove it's cost from the total. The only way I have been able to update a total is to swipe and delete it. Unfortunately, it doesn't recalculate the total, so I also have to manually uncheck all the items and recheck them to get my correct total back. This makes the running total essentially useless for me because there is no easy way to remove a checked item from my list if I go over budget or just change my mind about buying it. (by Marta) (coming in 1.2)
    • I'm working on this one, I clearly see the issue but the solution is not yet clear to me.
  • I would like to be able to Edit the name of an already created Catagory instead of deleting it and recreating it. (by Warren) (coming in 1.2)
  • I add info to the Item Description field, my final list may have large and smaller size font. It would be easier to read the list if it was all in the smaller font and a little more pleasing to the eye as well. (by Warren)
    • I'm not sure about this one, I may run a poll on this one
  • I was wondering, If making it possible to copy selected items from lists to a new list could be done? (by Warren)
    • I really like this one
  • Sometimes I purchase the same products in different stores. Instead of having to recreate all the same items like, breads, meats, etc, it would be nice to see the products be a database of it's own that can be added to multiple lists.
    • This one is good, but it may take some time before I manage to pull it off ... it hard!
  • - If a list doesn't have Use Categories enabled, the Need/Have, Need and Have buttons don't show up on the bottom of the screen. I would think that you'd still want to ability to toggle between these screens even if you aren't using categories on that list (by Marta). (coming in 1.2 as a list option)

    • This one is good an easy ... so comming very soon
  • There should be a way to access the list of categories (add, edit, reorder, etc.) without first having to create a new item. (by Marta) (coming in 1.2)
    • yes, it should
  • Localization and Languages (by Felipe)
  • How about a number icon that appears on the app icon alerting the user of how many items they NEED? (By Dale) ( may be in 1.2 .. because it is soooo cool))
  • Price comparizon with localization (by email)
  • Email/Sync lists(by email)
    • (Sync)This is a feature I'm really looking forward to implement. I think ist preaty common that the person who makes the list is not the same as the one who does the shopping. A quick solution for this is to be able to email the "need" section. But a cooler solution would be to sync the lists to some king of web service. Also creating and managing lists in a device with a bigger keyboard would be pleasent.
  • Lets say that you HAVE 4 jars of pickles. Right now, if I tap the HAVE pickles, all 4 will go to the NEED. It would be great if there is a qty of more then 1, a pop up will ask you how many you need to move to the NEED list (by Dale)
  • Would be nice to reorganize the list of shopping list. When I create one, this one goes to the end of the list. As I use your app for my home and my work, I'd like to reorganize the order ( tabaluga72).
  • Units!!( tabaluga72)

The following will come in 1.1, which is in review (by apple):

  • When typing my items, I like to have all words capitalized in the Catagories and for the Product Item Name - utilize the spacebar to capitalize the next letters. (by Warren)
  • When I select "Save and add another item" I would like the curser active in the Item Name field and have the keyboard popup - this will help speed up adding numberious items to a list (This idea could be applied to when creating new lists as well). (by Warren)

Add tax

Sent by Zach Dennison on 10/08/2008 at 03:51 PM

Allow users to specify if there is tax on an item, and what percentage, when they use prices. Maybe they can set up certain types of tax, like sales tax and meals tax. That would prevent users having to figure out the price with tax on their own when tax isn't calculated in the price.

Good one!

Help

Sent by ML on 11/08/2008 at 09:00 AM

How do i put the categories in order to replicate the order of the aisles in my grocery store?

The categories edit section is somewhat hidden but hopefully I'll explain how to get there. When you add an item inside a list push the button "Set Category", then upper right corner "Edit Categories". There you can add categories using the (+) button, delete them and rearange them by dragging them. When you make a list to "Use Categories" you will see your items ordered by category with watever order you defined. If this is not clear enough, please let me know.

Thanks, Felipe

Qty subtraction

Sent by Dale Sande on 11/08/2008 at 11:51 PM

I think that it would be a great feature if you could subtract from your HAVE quantity.

Lets say that you HAVE 4 jars of pickles.  Right now, if I tap the HAVE pickles, all 4 will go to the NEED.  It would be great if there is a qty of more then 1, a pop up will ask you how many you need to move to the NEED list.  I don't know about you, but I don't eat 4 jars of pickles in one sitting ;)

what do you mean?

Felipe Saint-Jean

Of course I do eat 4 jars in one sitting!! I LOVE pickles!! ... ok may be if they are really BIG jars it will be a very long sitting. So, if I understand correctly, you HAVE 4 jars, you eat two in one sitting, so now you NEED 2 and HAVE 2 and you would like the list to reflect that accurately, 2 in Need and 2 in Have, right?  I think that feature would be useful if you carry a very strict inventory. I don't really see this as a mainstream feature but I see it as a list option (something like "split items"). Thanks for the suggestion Dale!

Alert of NEED items

Sent by Dale Sande on 11/08/2008 at 11:57 PM

How about a number icon that appears on the app icon alerting the user of how many items they NEED?

This can be set on a list by list preference.  Example, I need to be reminded of the groceries I need, but that list of CDs, not so much.

About Managing Items

Sent by tabaluga72 on 18/08/2008 at 04:31 PM

Would be great to have a list of items (we enter once), and when we clic on them we add them to a shopping list. Then it will behave like it behaves now.

Another thing may be less important, the prices are in Dollars, would be nice to edit the currency. I know that a number is a number in any currency, I just could think Dollars is my currency, but it would be more finished like that...

The first feature is in the list, but I'm not sure it will make it to version 1.2 (coming out this week)but it is coming. About the currency, 1.2 will allow for localization so ShopList will respect your local currency and number notation.

Thanks! Felipe

Thanks for a great app! ...

Sent by Belinda on 19/08/2008 at 12:18 AM

Thanks for a great app! It's really easy to use, I'm really happy I purchased it. My 2 cents for features/enhancements:

* a quantity area when adding an item would be useful (however I see it asks for quantities when I check an item off the 'need' list, the go into the 'have' and uncheck)

* it would be nice to be able to collapse and expand sub-categories within a list by tapping on the name of that sub-category - my lists were long!

* Someone else mentioned... but having the ability to reduce the font size might help with long lists and also long names of items.

* Minor... If I don't have anything in the 'No Category' sub-cat, then by default it shouldn't show at the bottom of my lists.

It's very simple and great as it is now though, can't wait to take it for a spin around the shops :)

When adding a quantity, I ...

Sent by tabaluga72 on 19/08/2008 at 01:46 AM

When adding a quantity, I can't find a way to add what kind of quantity. Items, kg, liters...that could be useful when I do shopping with my wife. Wouldn't have to explain everytime what the number mean.

Units!!

I understand the need for units and I think I'll include them at some point.  I have thought about it and I haven't come up with a clean solution for this. Thanks, Felipe

Deleting items

Sent by Matjaz on 19/08/2008 at 03:40 PM

Very nice and useful app! But how to delete an item not a category?

Thanks Matjaz!

Swipe and delete! I made a little video showing the uses of swipe and delete all through ShopList. Check it out at the Frequent Questions section.

few more things I noticed

Sent by tabaluga72 on 19/08/2008 at 06:26 PM

So few more things I noticed :

- Would be nice to reorganize the list of shopping list. When I create one, this one goes to the end of the list. As I use your app for my home and my work, I'd like to reorganize the order.

- Is there a way to back up the shopping lists?

That's it.

Good app by the way. It's the first one about shopping list I buy (it is a shame we can't try app in the appstore), and I don't regret it.

Reordering lists is a good idea, thanks. Lists are backed up automatically when you sync (iTunes backups the directories for the installed applications). However, I'm working on an online plataform to backup, share and edit your lists online.

cheers, Felipe

Categories specific to list

Sent by Belinda on 02/09/2008 at 07:34 PM

I have another request... I'd like categories to show that are specific to the list I'm using - or an option to lock a category set to a list.

For example, when I'm in my groceries list I have the categories of: pantry, fresh, fridge, frozen etc.  But when I'm in my 'gifts' list I have the categories of John, mum, Dave, Linda etc.  I

t's a bit confusing now when I add groceries to have to scroll through an entire list of categories that have unrelated applications (eg pantry, John, fridge, mum etc)!

I hope you will consider my request for a future release.  Thanks again, your app is really useful.

Category reordering by list

Sent by David on 06/11/2008 at 06:46 PM

Similar to the above, I would like to be able to reorder categories within a list. Then I could have a lists for different shops, for instance, with the 'Dairy' and 'Bakery' in the right order for each.

As a future request (and I don't know if this would be possible), it would be fantastic to extend the above idea: have one shopping list for groceries in a 'prepare' view, then reorder that list by category depending on which supermarket you visit (on a 'shopping' view)

Great work so far!

David

share lists on synced computers

Sent by Jody Hetchka on 06/09/2008 at 07:56 AM

Is it possible to sync with my computer? I may be at work and remember that we need an item. If I could make a list on the computer and sync or push to the iPhone shopList that would be great!

Thanks for the suggestion. A Sync feature with the computer may be hard to achieve, but I am working on a feature to sync and backup with a web service. This will serve two poruporses. First, it will allow for edition of lists with a bigger keyboard. Second, will allow for more people in your family to edit the list for the cases in which the one that makes the list is not the same that does the shopping.

Would also love a sync ...

Sent by Kat on 25/09/2008 at 10:25 AM

Would also love a sync facility - or even ability to send as CSV file, for sharing and back-up.

Otherwise perfect app - meets my needs and looking forward to improvements and enhancements.

Thanks :) ... I'm working on a feature to sync to a free web service I'm building. It is quite a complex update, so I wan't to be super sure I have it right so it is not comming too soon.

Any news about ShopList?

Sent by Jill Eischen on 26/10/2008 at 04:49 AM

Is a new update of ShopList on the way?

I would really like to reorder my lists, the only feature I miss so far :)

Timeframe for update?

Sent by Kat on 29/10/2008 at 06:05 AM

Hi Felipe

When can we expect updates? I'm getting nervous about my data not being synced or backed up and have started using Zenbe. But would really like to continue with ShopList - yours really is the best and believe me i've tried a few! Looking forward to seeing the new features...... Kat

Cross-list product database

Sent by David Brewster on 06/11/2008 at 06:51 PM

Because I shop around and buy different products in different stores, it would be great if the need/have status of an item in one list could be synced with another. In other words, if I mark 'Frozen Peas' as 'Have' on one list, it also shows up as 'Have' on other lists.

I'm not sure if others would need this but I would love it!

David

Clear Prices

Sent by Jill on 12/11/2008 at 08:59 AM

Hello,

good to see this app is still alive ;D absolutely love it!

But I still have to make a tiny suggestion ;D

I noticed, when I copy a list, all the prices get copied too.

Maybe in the preferences of a list, a button could be placed to clear all prices of that list :)

Greetings, Jill

Move betweeen lists

Sent by Rujea on 13/08/2009 at 09:03 AM

When I am using more than one list at a time, I sometimes add the wrong item to the wrong list. It would be good if it was possible to move entries between lists.

Need screen

Sent by Joost Buis on 09/03/2010 at 04:51 PM

On the 'Need' screen it would be nice if only the categories that have items in them are shown.
